UFC 76 Knockout Decision
The event last night wasn’t as exciting as it could have been but there were still some great fights. We will start with probably the most exciting fight of the night, Thiago Tavares vs. Tyson Griffin. Once again the lighter weight classes steel the show, this was a grappling clinic. For a newer fan of the UFC it may not have seemed very exciting but it was truly a great example of two guys that really know how to roll. Tyson Griffin had some amazing escapes and Thiago was constantly trying to get him in some sort of submission. In the end it came to a decision with Griffin taking the win but he was the clear winner. I wouldn’t say he completely ran away with it but he did clearly dominate. Next we had Kazuhiro Nakamura vs. Lyoto Machida and again we see a Japanese fighter having a tuff time getting into the UFC. I don’t know what it is but you get a lot of bad ass Japanese fighters coming over and they don’t seem to do well. Machida dominated the entire fight and I will give it to Nakamura for hanging in there for the full three rounds. This was also a unanimous decision for Machida. Then we had Jon Fitch vs. Diego Sanchez, this was a fight I was really excited to see. I had predicted Fitch to win but got a lot of push back with people saying that Diego is primed and ready to go and plus he needs to get a win since he is coming off of a loss. But I think Diego is a very heady guy and still shaken about losing to his nemesis Josh Koscheck. This was a great fight and Fitch wasn’t having any of Diego’s typical tactics. Diego went in to shoot several times and the majority of the time Fitch stuffed him and stayed on his feet, or if he was taken down it didn’t take him very long to get back up for reverse the take down. Fitches ground game is sorely under rated and his is definitely a force to be reckoned with. However, he only won by a split decision. Personally I think he was robbed and would love to here why one of the judges had Diego as a clear winner, but this is why they always say, “Don’t leave it to the judges.” Alright now we have another crossover fighter coming into the UFC, I will stick to my guns and say anyone crossing over into the UFC that is supposed to be a big deal is going to have a hard time. It is not because they are not a good fighter but rather it is just a different game. Some differences may seem small, but small differences are what can determine the winner of a fight. We had Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Forrest Griffin, this was a great back and forth fight, both were really putting it on the line. This fight was pretty much all standing up which is where both fighters wanted it. By the end of the first round both fighters actually looked gassed already and I was wondering if the rest of the rounds would even be good and if we would see yet another fight going to the decision. They both seemed to summon up some more energy and started exchanging blows. Then with only 15 seconds left in the 3rd round Forrest won by submission with a rear naked choke, where I was at went wild. Finally we had seen a fight finish without going to decision. Forrest was looking great, but I think he may have over trained because he did seem to gas pretty easily in each round. Forrest, listen to Randy when he kicks your but out of the gym! Last but not least we have Keith Jardine vs. Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. This for sure would be a knock out fight and most likely ending in the first round possibly allowing the UFC enough time to show us one of the under card fights. Nope, this went the distance, all three rounds with Jardine winning by split decision. Wow, I was not expecting that but it seemed like through the entire fight Liddell just couldn’t get his timing on Jardine. Jardine was also using a ton of kicks, I think he wanted to stay as far away for Liddell’s hands as possible which is a smart move. Also with Jardine landing so many kicks to Liddell’s side I was surprised he didn’t have any broken ribs. This was another one where I couldn’t see how there was a split decision and that is hard for me to say because I am definitely a Liddell fan. All and all there was some great fighting but for a bunch of fights that should have been knockouts there sure were a lot of decisions. Rampage Jackson – Undisputed!! On September 8th at UFC 75 history was made. The UFC light heavyweight title holder Quinton “Rampage” Jackson fought the Pride light heavyweight title holder Dan Henderson. The title fight went the full 5 rounds with Rampage winning by a Unanimous Decision. Rampage and Henderson are friends and talked about this pre fight but when it was time to step into the Octagon Rampage was all business. When they first both stepped to the middle of the cage to start the fight Henderson reached out to Rampage with a smile but he wasn’t having it. I agree, if it was my good buddy I would want turn that part off and treat him like I would anyone else that got in my way and was trying to take my belt. After the end of the first round I thought Henderson might end up taking this title home and then in the second round Rampage almost seemed gassed but then out of nowhere his energy returned and he was all over Henderson for the rest of the fight. I would have loved to have seen the fight finished without having to go to a decision but it was a good fight none the less. This is a huge milestone with the UFC and Pride officially uniting to the two organizations to have Undisputed Champions. This is going to bring a lot more competition and I think we can expect to see some all out battles in the cage. As Dana White has already announced we should expect to see Fedor Emelianenko coming to fight for the UFC heavyweight title in late 2007 or early 2008. If Randy Couture still has the belt when this happens and pulls out yet another win I can already hear the crowd going crazy. All Hail Couture
Randy “The Natural” Couture pulls out yet another definitive win and defends his heavyweight title against Gabriel Gonzaga. This 44 year old phenom is a true inspiration and a thrill to watch. The first round started off quickly with Gonzaga throwing a quick combo but after that Couture controlled the rest of the fight. While picking up Gonzaga in the first round and throwing him to the ground Couture’s head smashed into Gonzaga’s face and broke his nose. This was the beginning of the end for Gonzaga. Couture continued to bring the fight close in and control Gonzaga against the cage. Gonzaga did manage to get a couple of good strikes in and one gnarly kick to Couture’s head but in the third round Couture finished the fight in half guard pounding Gonzaga into a TKO. In my book Couture’s last two fights have been the two best fights of the year. He is really on top of his game and seems up stoppable. We will have to see who he is paired up with next and what happens when his current contract ends. He has a lot of new things on his plate right now like the Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts gyms he has been opening up. It makes me wonder if he is truly preparing for retirement now. Either way I the UFC couldn’t have a better person in the lime light to bring more attention to this exciting sport. | Houston Alexander Upset, Thiago Silva comes out on top At UFC 78 it was one of the most anticipated fights of the night. Not only has Houston Alexander know now for great standing knock outs but all the previous fights were predominantly on the ground, so it was going to be a nice change of pace. As Houston said in my interview with him, he did get the first shot off and everything was going well. Houston and Thiago traded some good blows and Houston was looking to get the best of the exchanges and then it went to the ground. At first Houston was doing well and then he made one small mistake in trying to hold on to a guillotine choke when he didn't have a great position and Thiago was able to capitalize and get a full mount. After that happend it was over, Houston was not able to shake loose and Thiago won by TKO. This is a huge win for Thiago Silva and will certainly launch him into another good match. I am looking forward to seeing who he is paired up with next. As for Houston, this is a set back but I don't believe it will be a very big set back. I am sure we will be seeing him fighting again soon against a noteworthy opponent and a more improved ground game. Houston is for Real The most exciting fight of the night for UFC 75 goes to Houston “The Assassin” Alexander. He was matched up with Alessio Sakara, a hard hitting Italian ready to take on the UFC. Before this fight the only thing we had seen was Houston making quick work of Keith Jardine and finishing him with a TKO in 48 seconds of the first round. It was impressive but it could have also just been one of those fluke things. Now after seeing him fight Alessio you can tell the Houston is no joke, he also make quick work of Alessio finishing him in 1:01 of the first round. This is guy is powerful and fast and I think is going to climb up to a title shot pretty quickly. The Light Heaveyweight division already has some bad ass guys but Houston easily fits right in the mix. To tell you the truth I wouldn’t mind seeing him fight Rampage Jackson next but I also think he needs probably one more fight under his belt with a major contender. I love to see guys like this come out of nowhere and really mix things up. This is the guy to watch in the Light Heavyweight division this year. Josh Koscheck Finally Put in "Check"
Outspoken and confident Josh Koscheck lost in a unanimous decision to George St. Pierre at UFC 74. He was beat at his own game and taken down time after time while GSP imposed his will. It was great to see GSP come back after his loss against Matt Serra with a fire in his eyes. This should easily put GSP back on the road for a title shot. He is no doubt one of the most well rounded and athletic fighters in Mixed Martial Arts today. I look forward to seeing who he will be matched up with next. Josh Koscheck on the other hand will be taking a step back, I believe it will be a small step back but this could be just the thing he needed to humble him and inspire him to train even harder than he already does. Josh has dealt with a great deal of criticism since his time on the Ultimate Fighter but has proven to be a true contender.
